Super Efficient Travel Server and Router
Either pfSense or OPNSense could be run virtualized via Proxmox and your hardware compatibility issues will go *poof*. pfSense in particular has (had?) issues with Intel I226 NIC drivers (2.5 Gb) so the hardware support just wasn't there (OPNsense doesn't have that problem). But if you run Proxmox, it supports all that and the virtual NICs it presents to your firewall OS of choice will run flawlessly. I use OPNSense, and pfSense is probably the same, but you can install the Proxmox drivers for better support, but it also works fine right away. I'm not sure what your issues could have been with wifi... in theory your wifi access points shouldn't care what firewall you're using. But, I will say that I have issues sometimes when I reboot my OPNSense to do an upgrade or whatever, my Engenius access points will sometimes boot my clients. That may be on the client side (Windows) where Windows sees I have no internet access so it tries to reconnect to a different AP (I have several in the home) but then it can't get a DHCP address since that's on the router, so I end up with a Windows machine whining about not reaching a DHCP or internet. If it had just stuck it out and not been so aggressive about the loss of Internet, it would have been fine. So, I think that's a Windows issue but I'm not ruling out something that the AP is doing.
Thanks.
You look like the kind of guy who teaches people about what open source software they can use on a router.
oh wow, this literally just saved me countless hours of banging around in the GUI. Great video and thanks!
I have a Qotom bare metal with SFP+ and 2.5G ports loaded with pfSense that works great for the home. I also have another Qotom (2.5G ports only) in my homelab that I loaded Proxmox to and have opnSense running as a Virtual Machine, it works great as well.
I had issues with stability on opnsense and pfsense at 1st on my similar box. turns out there was a microcode update that needed to be done. i landed on pfsense because that's what i happened to be running when i found and applied that update. It's been an extremely solid option for me since and i use the tailscale plugin for vpn to my netowrk. PFsense is setup in a VM through proxmox with two of the ethernet ports directly accessed by the pfsense vm. i like doing it this way for the backups proxmox provides which has saved me before.
You forgot to mention routeros. Another option is installing proxmox and virtualise opnsense of pfsense. Also works perfect. Also don't forget OpenWrt and similar software.
I didn't realize that RouterOs could be installed on any hardware. I mentioned OpenWrt right in the beginning, when I was talking about Tomato router. I prefer not to virtualize due to I have a spouse. If the server needs to be rebooted the whole network would go down and that would make the family unhappy.
RouterOS is not freeware. The least expensive license is 45$.
Imo Pfsense and Opensense are solid router/firewall software, that for the vast majority are not needed, i find more appealing Ubiquit offering, while limited and not as powerful, their integration with unifi, having their switch, accespoints among other things, makes it an ecosystem that imo offers more to the average user.
Thanks. A new computer system would not connect to an old version of OMV 4.X (Arrakis). It could be a Windows 11 quirk because other Windows 10 systems and one Windows 11 system on my network were connecting. Giving read/write permissions for each user to Sudo, Sambashare, ssh, etc. did the trick.
*OpenWRT:* You can also run this on a x86 machine, not just on a flashed router - it's very fast. *pfSense:* The thing about FreeBSD isn't as "up to date" isnt true, but the hardware support is limited compared to Linux. *OPNsense:* At the moment, it runs on FreeBSD 13.2, while pfSense runs on 14.0. Also WiFi on FreeBSD is still hit or miss. *Dynfi:* This is a french fork of OPNsense, with a different UI and some other changes. *BSD Router Project:* This is a pretty advanced project, I guess compareable to VyOS. *Smoothwall:* Never ised it, don't know anything about it. *VyOS:* Like the BSDRP, this is pretty andvanced, if you aren't comfortable with a CLI, dont use it. *Untangle:* It seems to have some decent content filtering. *Linux-router:* Could be something like VyOS? *Shorewall:* Never heard about it. *IP Fire:* I'm actually surprised this is still going, might be the closest Linux alternative to OPNsense? *Firewalla:* Apart from the Smartphome management aspect, I'm not shure what else it has going on. Something you could take a look at is Sophos XG Home Firewall. You need to register for a Serial Number (License), but you get all the features for a unlimited time.
A third technical youtubing Jeff?
Yes, us Jeff's love tech. :)
Lijep hrvatski nogometni dres =) I think Pfesense or Opnsense are the the most robust options to install on x86 platforms you are starting out as they are probably the most well documented. Tons of options under $150 USD for N100 multi 2.5g NIC mini PC's- Even less if you only need gigabit.
Had a Qotom with quad lan ports and J1900 running Smoothwall for about 6 years before it died. Switched up to an HP T730 earlier this year running pfsense. Biggest issue with Smoothwall was the lack of wireless support.
pfsense works like a champ
sophos offer a free home firewal

Does that mini pc have a N5105 cpu? If so, could you please make a BIOS dump of it and send it to me? Long story short, I have the same mini pc and flashed an updated BIOS (without making a backup first) and suddenly the SATA port just stopped working. Whatever BIOS a flashed afterwards, the SATA port never worked ever since and I cannot find the original BIOS it was flashed on anywhere. Thanks in advance ❤
I'm a newbie to creating backups and would like to know if my idea would work using UrBackUp . I have two machines, a windows 10 desktop with (3) three internal nvme ssd drives, a windows 10 Laptop with (2)two nvme internal drives and (2)two nvme external drives. My idea is to use a mini computer running windows 10 or 11, with a large (maybe a 5T ssd) drive for holding backups, the OS(10/11) on a 128GB nvme drive. populate the mini PC with the windows version of Urbackup server, the Desktop and Laptop with the Urackup client version, and do my backup of files from both machines. I'm not interested in the speed of the backup or stuff like that. I just want to be able to backup certain files and folders on a scheduled basis automatically. would my idea work?
I've only had mine for a few days (an already old model from Amazon, and as is, it strikes me as a slightly more functional, but generally overhyped tablet, nowhere near actual laptop functionality.
I am running both. The best of both worlds. OMV is great for maintaining raid setups and moving files around to different servers. CasaOS is great for the mess that OMV calls compose service and to run my home media services. CasaOS also made it point and click easy to migrate my OMV Docker compose apps into CasaOS. If people go this route, they should install OMV first to set up their raid. It would be great to see the two merge as one software, but knowing the history of OMV, programmer egos tend to get in the way.
For those who are using OMV, I installed CasaOS alongside OMV using the simple one line CasaOS install command found on their github page. It installed in less than a minute for me. It is very lightweight. After logging into the GUI, I then migrated all my docker/compose files over to CasaOS which CsaOS makes it very easy to do. CasaOS automagically brings in all the configurations from my OMV working docker programs when you convert each docker. That was a nice touch. I remember it being a pain to set up all my drive configurations when initially setting up my docker modules. This saved a ton of time. It took less than an 30 minutes for me to migrate all my docker files to CasaOS. CasaOS does not yet have all power of OMV in terms of setting up raid drives and monitoring them nor all the seervices like OMV has. OMV shines in that area. OMV compose is a pain to use thus installing CasaOS fills in and shines in that area. I have not run into any conflicts between OMV and Casa. Casa was a little wonky converting/pulling in some of my dockers from . I had to hit rebuild a few times and re-fresh the browser page. It all worked out. This is the best of both worlds.
Good to know this has an option to switch to metres. Otherwise most people could not really do anything with it. Otherwise it seems a great tool and I will check it out now. Thanks for the video!
Can’t use this on Mac says can’t verify I’ll keep using torrents
Intro is loud. The rest of the video is a bit lower in volume.
I had the same issue a few years ago where i wasn't able to install TrueNAS because it always reverted back to TOS and i found a different solution through command prompt. I dont remember the exact details. I didnt have the guts to mess with the bios reflash so good on you.
how do you screenrecord while on bios?
I have an ATEM.
If it doesn't work Can this process be reversed by putting the screw back?
Yes, if you haven't deleted everything. If you are worried don't do it.
Thanks for this video! Can CASA OS be utilized for a R-Pi instead (no need for Debian in this case I would think)? How about running on a R-Pi with OMV running concurrently, or would that be redundant? I have an old Zyxel NAS that is still functional but getting up there in years and am looking at a way to replace it with a better, and newer option.
You still need debian. People do both CasaOS and OMV, but if you are doing it on a Pi, there is no reason.
I could not even flash the iso and boot from it, validation just failed
Try, try again.
Why don't I have children in omv-extras installed? no setings docker portainer and yacht.
I don't know what you mean by children. Post more info to the OMV forums.
too bad. the setup process what im looking for is the one you cut out, the windows 11 thing.
Just set it up like normal. There is nothing new.
imagine not clicking advanced to log in via chrome due to not using HTTPS...
I'm currently researching which to use, and narrowed down to omv and truenas, i think I'll go with omv, looks like best option for my low pc I'm using as hardware anyway.
Low end is definitely OMV. Truenas uses lots of resources.
So how can I use zero tier to get back into my OMV server?
Yes
How would you go about doing this on omv6?
You can't due to no virtual box.
@@TechnoDadLife that’s sad. 😢 I managed to run a VM on omv6 but no way to port the display onto an ip.
32" monitor is too big?!?!? Bigger is always better! ;-)
I think for me, the sharpness is more important at this size.
new to this and thinking about setting this up on an old raspberry pi i recently got. would this only allow me to connect to my server (the pi) or would it allow me to connect to every device on my network as if i was there?
Every device could connect to your Pi.
First
CasaOS looks excellent but like someone else here I cannot get plex to run. Upon launching Plex I get "No Access" message. I cannot find ifo about how and where to fix this permission problem. Would be great to get a more detailed tutorial
Try reinstalling it. I remember having this problem once.
can this be done on synology? not sure how to access openmediavault
Yes
Zero $?
You use something you already have and convert it.
Aw man! You skipped the windows setup screens I’m having trouble with. My Beelink doesn’t let me answer the security questions.
I didn't have any problems. They are just the normal questions. I would call the company.
No dice. Any ideas?
very good job!!!
Thank you for this video. When using a different OS, are the fans running on high all the time, or does the BIOS still control fan speed depending on Hard Drive temperatures? Appreciate your response.
Bios, it seems.
thanks you , i've been out of it for awhile. I guess i struggle to figure why use CasaOS. Would umbrel be better choice. thanks again
Thanks for the explanations. My question is this. Why when I install the services in OMV just as you say, following your steps, everything works fine, I change passwords and it accepts them, I start to put it in Spanish, I put my profile... everything is fine. But the next day when I log in again there is no way, it does not accept the passwords I entered, it tells me you do not have access, etc. I have put the same ports that you say and nothing. That's what happens to me with Portainer, Yacht, PhotoPrism... I really don't understand it.
You would best to ask the author for that.
Thanks Great tutorial
Glad you liked it
